Paris Jackson to appear on 'Ellen'

We’ll hear from one of Michael Jackson’s children on Thursday's "Ellen." According to People, MJ’s daughter Paris, 13, will give a revealing interview, discussing the infamous masks she and her siblings wore, among other things. "I'm like, 'This is stupid, why am I wearing a mask?' " she says of wearing the face coverings (along with her brothers Prince, 14, and Blanket, 9) for so many years. "But I kind of realized the older I got, like, he only tried to protect us. And he'd explain that to us, too." Paris, who has an upcoming movie role, says her dad inspired her desire to act. "We would do improv together," she recalls. "He would give us little scenarios. He would go, 'Okay, in this scene you're going to cry,' and I'd cry on the spot." Paris will also reveal the most memorable thing her late father ever told her. "He said, 'If I die tomorrow, always remember what I told you,'" the teen said. "I took his advice and I remembered everything he told me." Luckily, Paris says she’s adjusting to her new, more public life. "I'm treated the same," she says. "When I came to [school], they didn't know who I was. I was like, yes, I have a chance to be normal." Lindsay Lohan did have an "Ellen" interview scheduled to tape on Tuesday to air on Thursday, but the 25-year-old actress missed her flight back from Hawaii and couldn't do the taping as planned, although she did offer to reschedule.

Madonna Teams Up with Cirque du Soleil for NFL Halftime Show

The National Football League has announced that Madonna will be the featured performer at the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show.  The championship football game takes place on February 5, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Madonna is reportedly putting the show together with a creative team from Cirque du Soleil, choreographer Jamie King and multimedia artists from Canadian entertainment studio Moment Factory.

Marlon, Tito and Jackie Jackson will be in Japan on December 13 and 14 to perform two concerts as a tribute to their late brother Michael.  The shows will also feature some Japanese artists, including popular R&B star A.I.  The Jacksons and A.I. plan to release a duet, called “Letter in the Sky,” on December 14.

On December 17, Julien’s Auctions will sell the contents of Michael Jackson’s leased Los Angeles home.  The 600 pieces include furniture, artwork, and other personal family items.  The headboard from the bed in which Michael died was removed from the auction at the request of his estate.

Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chilli Peppers Among Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2012.  The Faces, Guns N’ Roses, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, Donovan and the late Laura Nyro will be added in the Performers category.  In addition, late blues great Freddie King will be inducted in the Early Influences category, late producer Don Kirshner will be honored with the Ahmet Ertegun Award and engineer/producers Glyn Johns, Cosimo Matassa and the late Tom Dowd will receive the Award For Musical Excellence.  The 27th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions will be held on April 14, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio.  The ceremony is being taped for a May 2012 HBO special.

Buble Tops Billboard 200 Chart

Pop singer Michael Buble’s new holiday album, Christmas, spends its second week at the top of the Billboard 200 chart.  With 293,000 additional copies sold during the past week, total sales of the album have surpassed the one million mark.  Christmas is the seventh album to sell more than one million copies in 2011.

"Beyond the Sea," Bobby Darin
No sea-inspired playlist would be complete without this song. "Beyond the Sea" has been sung by many artists over the past six decades, but Bobby Darin's version is undoubtedly the most famous. Despite the performer recording the song in the late 1950s, it's been used in many recent films from "Austin Powers" to "Finding Nemo." Fellow actors Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz sung "Beyond the Sea" in the film "A Life Less Ordinary," while Kevin Spacey lent his vocal chords to it in a biopic about Darrin named after his most famous song.
"Sail on Sailor," The Beach Boys
It's hard to go past The Beach Boys when compiling a list of seaside classics. The group -- made up of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, along with Mike Love and Al Jardine -- are synonymous with beach tunes and surfing hits. "Sail on Sailor" was released on the 1973 album "Holland," one of the last albums the Californian pop group released.
"Under the Sea," from Disney's "The Little Mermaid"
While perhaps not a traditional party song, it is a childhood favorite for many. In the movie, mermaid princess Aerial longs to join the human world above the water's surface. However, the king's advisor, a lobster called Sebastian, tries to convince her otherwise, singing to her about the joys of ocean life, telling her "darling it's better, down where it's wetter."
"Octopus's Garden," The Beatles
The fab four recorded this song for their 1969 album "Abbey Road." Unusually for The Beatles, this song was written by drummer Ringo Starr, who was also the lead vocalist on the track. The upbeat tune tells of the carefree nature of an octopus's life below the surface, featuring lyrics such as "in our little hideaway beneath the waves, resting our head on the sea bed."
"(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay," Otis Redding
This was the last song recorded by Redding before he was killed in a plane crash in 1967. It was released after his death and was the first posthumous song to reach the number-one spot on the U.S charts. Redding was also posthumously awarded a Grammy for the song in 1968. He was inspired to write the soulful masterpiece after staying on a houseboat in California.
"The Ocean," Led Zeppelin
British rock band Led Zeppelin penned this tune in the early 1970s at the height of their success. It's believed the band were referring to their "ocean of fans" when they wrote this song, with lyrics such as "singing to an ocean, I can hear the ocean's roar." But it's just as easy for a keen seafarer to imagine dramatic ocean waves when listening to this tune.
"Girl and the Sea," The Presets
For a change of pace, this tune could be perfect to get your party started. By electro-pop act The Presets, "Girl and the Sea" is guaranteed to get people on the dance floor. It's said the duo recorded this song, their debut, in the bathroom of their home.
"Mermaid in the Night," Jimmy Buffett
For those who appreciate country music, Jimmy Buffet's "Mermaid in the Night" is the perfect ocean-inspired song. It appears on the 1989 album "Off to see the Lizard," just one of the more than 30 albums Buffet has released. This fun tune tells of the singer falling in love with a mermaid while fishing one evening, with lyrics like "I'm in love with a creature from the sea, she brings out the crustacean in me".

R.E.M. announced on its website that the rock band is breaking up after 31 years.  Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills wrote, “To our fans and friends:  As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band.  We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished.  To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”  R.E.M.’s biggest hits include “Stand,” “Shiny Happy People,” “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts.”  This past March, R.E.M. released its 15th and final album, Collapse into Now.

On September 25, pop-rock singer Matt Nathanson kicked off a North American headlining tour in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He’s supporting his first new album in four years, “Modern Love.”  The 25-city “All Night Noise Tour” runs through November 5.

Country singer Keni Thomas begins his “Black Hawk Down Middle East Tour” on September 27.  The former Army Ranger fought the Black Hawk Down battle in Mogadishu, Somalia.  In addition to entertaining U.S. troops with his music, he’ll meet with soldiers to share stories.  The motivational tour wraps up on October 7.  In other news, Keni’s memoir, “Get It On! What It Means To Lead the Way,” will be released on October 1.

On September 29, Country star Luke Bryan will play the first of six shows on his charity “Farm Tour.”  This marks the third consecutive year for the tour, which allows Bryan to give back to local farming communities.  Proceeds from the concerts will go toward college scholarships for a student from a farming family in each city.

Universal Music is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s major label debut album Nevermind with the release of a Super Deluxe Edition.  The expanded set’s four CDs contain the original album, demos and other rare tracks, radio sessions, alternate mixes, live recordings, and more.  Also included is a DVD with the four music videos from Nevermind, unreleased BBC recordings and the band’s Halloween 1991 concert in Seattle, Washington.

Awards Presentations/Winners:

The 22nd annual International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards will be presented in Nashville on September 29.  The Boxcars lead this year’s contenders with 10 nominations, including Entertainer of the Year.  The new bluegrass group shares the IBMA’s top category with Dailey & Vincent, The Grascals, Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers and The Gibson Brothers.  Following close behind with eight nods is Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out.  Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas and The Gibson Brothers picked up seven mentions each.  Sam Bush will host the awards ceremony at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.  (Complete list of nominees at www.ibma.org.)

Look Who's Going on Tour!

On September 25, pop-rock singer Matt Nathanson kicked off a North American headlining tour in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He’s supporting his first new album in four years, “Modern Love.”  The 25-city “All Night Noise Tour” runs through November 5.

Country singer Keni Thomas begins his “Black Hawk Down Middle East Tour” on September 27.  The former Army Ranger fought the Black Hawk Down battle in Mogadishu, Somalia.  In addition to entertaining U.S. troops with his music, he’ll meet with soldiers to share stories.  The motivational tour wraps up on October 7.  In other news, Keni’s memoir, “Get It On! What It Means To Lead the Way,” will be released on October 1.

On September 29, Country star Luke Bryan will play the first of six shows on his charity “Farm Tour.”  This marks the third consecutive year for the tour, which allows Bryan to give back to local farming communities.  Proceeds from the concerts will go toward college scholarships for a student from a farming family in each city.

Saxophonist Jessy J has been a bright light on the smooth jazz scene since releasing her debut album three years ago.  Her latest effort, Hot Sauce, taps into her Latin influences on such tracks as “Meant To Be.”  It also includes Will Young’s pop hit “Leave Right Now,” Duke Ellington’s “In A Sentimental Mood,” and eight originals.  According to Jessy, who was born Jessica Spinella in Portland, Oregon, the “J” in Jessy J stands for Jazz.

Hiromi was introduced to jazz at age eight, and at 14, performed with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.  After a brief stint as a law student in Tokyo, she came to the U.S. to study jazz at the Berklee College of Music.  She was offered her first recording contract while still attending Berklee.

Hiromi’s Voice features The Trio Project, with Anthony Jackson on bass and Simon Phillips on drums.

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones have reunited.  Actually, they never broke up, but the award-winning fusion band has revived their original lineup for a new album called “Rocket Science.”

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones celebrate their 23rd year with the return of co-founding member Howard Levy.  The pianist and harmonica player spent four years as a Flecktone, appearing on their first three albums and touring the world, before his announcing his departure in 1992.

While the Flecktones carried on as a trio - and later a quartet - with saxophonist Jeff Coffin, Howard Levy ventured into pop, rock, classical, Latin and world music, as well as music for theatre and film.

In 2009, he accepted an offer to re-join the group on a tour across the U.S. and Europe, fueling the fire for the quartet to return to the studio.

Together again on “Gravity Lane,” it’s banjo master Bela Fleck, Howard Levy on harmonica, bassist Victor Wooten, and Victor’s older brother Roy “Future Man” Wooten playing percussion and Drumitar.  Future Man’s self-invented Drumitar, also known as a synth-axe, is a guitar-shaped instrument that replicates the sound of samplers and drum machines.

Fleck adapts to just about every known musical category.  A familiar Grammy contender, he has been nominated in more categories than any other artist, including jazz, bluegrass, classical, arranging and songwriting.  He contributed nine new songs to “Rocket Science.”

His interest in rekindling the original lineup came simply from wanting to pick up where they left off all those years ago.  Fleck says, “I was intrigued by what we could do that we haven’t done before.”

Sade Begins US Tour in Baltimore
Nigerian pop singer Sade begins her first national tour since 2001 on June 16.  The trek starts in Baltimore, Maryland and continues to 38 more North American cities through August 30.  Sade’s tour is in support of her “Soldier of Love” album, which debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than one million copies in the U.S.

On June 16, Garth Brooks, John Bettis, Leon Russell, Allen Toussaint and the songwriting team of Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  The 42nd annual induction and awards dinner will take place at New York’s Marriott Marquis Hotel.  Songwriters Hall of Fame Chairman Jimmy Webb released a statement that says, “We are inspired by the striking caliber and range of the 2011 Songwriters Hall of Fame class.  John, Garth, Leon, Billy, Tom and Allen each represent a unique breed of artist, warmly respected by their peers and revered by all lovers of song.  As songwriters, their work has forever enriched our world's music.”  During the ceremony, legendary singer Chaka Khan will be honored with the Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award.  Webb says, “Chaka Kahn’s signature voice and unique vision have influenced the sound of popular music in a way that has endured.  We are proud to bestow this well-deserved honor upon her.”

Stevie Wonder will be in New York on June 13 to be inducted into the Apollo Theater’s Legends Hall of Fame.  The event includes a concert featuring Wyclef Jean, Yolanda Adams, Melanie Fiona, Raphael Saadiq, Paul Schaffer, and Chick Corea, among other special guests.  Previous inductees include Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Little Richard and Patti LaBelle.

Shania Twain Releases New Single

Country-pop star Shania Twain’s first new single in six years will be released on June 12.  “Today Is Your Day” will be exclusively available on iTunes following the world premiere of the song during the finale of her Oprah Winfrey Network docu-drama series, Why Not? with Shania Twain.  In other news, Shania has announced that she’ll begin a two-year engagement in Las Vegas on December 1, 2012.  Her show, called “Shania: Still the One,” will take place at the Caesars Palace Colosseum, the same venue used by Celine Dion and Elton John.

Idol McCreery Signs Record Deal

2011 American Idol winner Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina have signed recording deals with Mercury Nashville/19 Recordings/Interscope.  Both are in Nashville to take part in the CMA Music Festival.  While in Music City, Scotty and Lauren are spending time in a studio working on their debut albums, which are expected to be released within the next few months.


Scherzinger to Replace Cole as X Factor Judge

Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger has been chosen to replace Cheryl Cole as a judge on the U.S. version of The X Factor.  FOX-TV will launch the singing competition in September.  Cheryl was also dropped from judging the U.K.’s X Factor, a job she’s had since 2008.  Reports now indicate she’s in the running to host the upcoming U.K. version of The Voice.

iTunes to Release Beatles Anthology Albums

On June 14, The Beatles’ three Anthology albums will be released as digital downloads on iTunes.  Originally released in 1995 and 1996, the collections will debut on the site in three different versions.  They’ll be sold individually, as a three-volume box set and a 23-track “Anthology Highlights” album.  In addition, the 155 tracks are available for paid download for $1.29 each.  On May 31, iTunes began offering an “Anthology” video introduction and a 50-minute “Meet The Beatles” radio show for free streaming at www.iTunes.com/TheBeatles.

On June 14, legendary Country Alabama will host “BAMA RISING: A Benefit Concert for Alabama Tornado Recovery.”  The show will take place in Birmingham, Alabama, with proceeds going to victims of the April 27 storms that devastated the Southern state.  Also on the bill are Brad Paisley, Sara Evans, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Martina McBride, Dierks Bentley, Rodney Atkins, Darius Rucker, and Sheryl Crow, among others.

The inaugural Rapids Jam Music Festival will take place June 16-18 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.  Performers include Willie Nelson, Lady Antebellum, Sugarland, Darius Rucker, Jamey Johnson, Lee Brice, Randy Houser, Colt Ford, and more.  Over 100,000 music fans are expected to attend the event.

The 2011 “Show Me Music and Arts Festival” will be held June 17-19 in Springfield, Missouri.  In addition to three days of concerts, the event will feature a Comedy Tent Stage with nationally touring comedians, a Chef’s Pavilion Stage featuring three top Food Network chefs, a Kid Zone with rides, games and entertainment, and an arts and crafts area with over 30 exhibitors.  The festival will include performances by One Republic, Train, Tim McGraw, Trace Adkins, Little Big Town, and many others.

On June 16, Britney Spears kicks off her “Femme Fatale” world tour in Sacramento, California.  She’ll be supporting her new album of the same name.  Nicki Minaj will open shows on the 31-date North American leg, which wraps up on August 14 in Toronto.  Britney will begin international dates in St. Petersburg, Russia on September 22.
On June 16, Country star Keith Urban will kick off his 56-city “Get Closer 2011 World Tour.”  North American dates begin in Mobile, Alabama.  Shows will feature Keith’s many hits, as well as songs from his latest album, “Get Closer.”  He says, “Even as we were writing for the album, I could tell right away that these songs were gonna soar in concert.  The foundation that we build the tour’s production upon will be as it’s always been, ensuring the clearest and strongest connection possible with the audience.”  U.S. and Canadian concerts wrap up on October 15 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

On June 18, Country trio Rascal Flatts launches its “Flatts Fest” tour in Bristow, Virginia.  The festival tour will offer interactive pre-show activities and contests that include a karaoke challenge, a wedding chapel, scavenger hunt, carnival games and food, and more.  Special guests on the 23-city tour are Sara Evans, Easton Corbin and Justin Moore.
